It is really as easy as 1-2-3...

Step 1: Purchase an appliance and put the software on it

You can buy an original TP-Link TL-MR3020 or TL-WR902AC online, for example from Amazon. In this case, follow these instructions in order to flash the HomeTunnel firmware onto your unit.

As an alternative, you can get a HomeTunnel box with our software already pre-installed from one of our distributors:

Varia Store

Step 2: Connect the HomeTunnel box to your home network

Connect the HomeTunnel box to your mains supply via the USB cable and the power adapter and attach it to your home network via the supplied ethernet cable.

After the box has finished starting, you can register for service by entering the URL https://hometunnel.net in your browser - either from a PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet. This works best if your browser takes the same internet connection as the HomeTunnel box, because you will not have to enter its MAC (printed on the back of the device) manually then!

The same URL will be your starting point if you want to configure your HomeTunnel VPN in the future, so it might be a good idea to bookmark it.

Once you have finished registration, a free trial period of 30 days will start - unless you have acquired a longer running license bundled with a ready-made HomeTunnel box. You can always prolong your license later.

Step 3: Prepare your mobile devices

Install the OpenVPN software on your mobile device. Depending on your platform, there may be several OpenVPN-capable applications available. Many of them are free, some have to be paid for, such as Viscosity or VyprVPN.

After the software has been installed, open the local administration interface of your HomeTunnel box with your client's browser and download the VPN credentials. Open the downloaded credentials with your newly installed OpenVPN application. After that, you are ready to start up your VPN and securely use your LAN from everywhere as if you were at home.
